Physical Education at the Skylark Federation
Intent:
Our ‘Intent’ – in designing our bespoke, South Downs curriculum is to maximise the potential of all of our pupils; intellectually, socially, morally, emotionally and culturally. – we believe our curriculum should be relevant and have a strong local resonance with pupils. In doing so, our intention is that all learners reach their full potential through a curriculum that is tangible and real for pupils of the South Downs. That is not to say our curriculum is narrow-sighted: we use children’s local understanding to project their minds across the globe.
Implementation:
Physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. Students have 2 hour long PE lessons weekly to be develop and strengthen the skills identified in the National Curriculum. In line with the national curriculum objectives, the school has invested in the Val Sabin resource for Gymnastics and Dance in KS1 and KS2 to ensure the correct terminology is being used and to promote progression in these units of work. In addition, the Sports lead provides units of work and general resources to support the teaching of Sport and Games. Currently a new scheme of work is being considered and trialled for implementation in the 2021-22 academic year. The daily mile is encouraged in each class and a trophy is awarded weekly in KS2 for those who are consistently trying their best, whilst modelling an excellent and encouraging attitude towards his/her peers. Whenever possible, outside providers are invited into the school to expose the students to a range of sporting activities and provide a high level of instruction. Intra-sporting events are timetabled termly to occur between key stages as well as between house teams. The intra-sporting activities promote the spirit of the game, encourage cooperation and promote the school’s learning behaviours and values. Inter-sporting events occur at KS2 and the school has a partnership with Chailey Secondary to participate in termly competitions. Furthermore, the ‘Five hour offer’ of PE and Sport is given and provides students with opportunities year round to engage in recreational activities. This is: 2 hours of PE lessons per week in curriculum time, an additional 1 hour through clubs and extra-curricular activities on the school site and a further 2 hours through a mixture of school and community/club organised sport.
Impact:
All students participate in intra-sport competitions termly. The competitions are Key Stage appropriate and provide opportunities for students to apply and showcase their athletic skills. Alongside the curriculum, the range of clubs offered are hugely popular with our students, which run year round.
