PE at Plumpton Primary School
Intent
At Plumpton Primary School, Physical Education (PE) is a fundamental part of school life. Not only will pupils learn about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, they will also develop essential life skills. Teamwork, communication, problem-solving and resilience are at the heart of our PE curriculum.
Whilst successfully promoting competitive sporting events, we also provide opportunities for children to pursue other interests outside of popular sports. Our school development plan prioritises the development of dance throughout the school and we raise the profile of individual sports such as gymnastics and swimming.
We believe that our pupils are entitled to a rich and dynamic PE curriculum. The core of our PE ethos incudes:
- Enjoyment
- Inclusion
- Personal Development
- Motivation
Implementation
Physical activity helps to improve health, reduces stress and improves concentration whilst also promoting correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. Students have two, one-hour long PE lessons weekly to develop and strengthen the skills identified in the National Curriculum. In line with the national curriculum objectives, the school has invested in the Get Set for PE resource for our chosen core sports, Gymnastics, Dance and Games in KS1 and KS2 to ensure the correct terminology is being used and to promote progression in these units of work. In addition, the Sports leaders provide units of work and general resources to support the teaching of Sport and Games.
The daily mile is encouraged in each class to promote physical and mental health and wellbeing. Outside coaching providers are used in the school to expose the students to a range of inclusive, unique and engaging sporting activities. Inter-sporting events and county events are timetabled, throughout each half term, allowing all key stages to access a variety of activities promoting the spirit of the game, encourage cooperation and promote the school’s learning behaviours and values.
Impact
All students are given the opportunity to participate in termly Skylark Federation sport competitions. The competitions are Key Stage appropriate and provide opportunities for students to apply and showcase their athletic skills. Alongside the curriculum, the range of clubs offered are hugely popular with our students, which run all year round. Our students develop the confidence and skills to try new sports, maintain motivation for exercise and embrace the mental health benefits of physical activity.
